EDUSAT
INTRODUCTION :
EDUSAT, originally called GSAT – 3, was a communication satellite launched into space by the Indian Space Research Organization on 20 September 2004. The primary purpose of this satellite was for distant classroom education for students studying in schools, from primary to high school. This was the first satellite to be launched by India focusing on educational background. It was a highly appreciated move by the Indian government; it shows India’s commitment to using space technologies for development. EDUSAT has different features. It has a multimedia system, audio-visual medium and digital classrooms.
EDUSAT network has two types of terminals namely, Satellite Interactive Terminal (SIT) and Receive Only Terminal (ROT).
EDUSAT is a branch of the Department of Educational Technology at DSERT. Major activities are telecasting EDUSAT lessons, Tele-education lessons, Teleconferencing. Activities related to Krishna Studio, Tunga Studio and Audio Studios, Jnanadeepa You-Tube channel and HUB Operation and maintenance are carried out.
OBJECTIVES :
- Facilitating teaching learning process through effective mass media.
- Promotion of educational initiatives through Jnanadeepa YouTube channel.

Telecast of EDUSAT lessons :
Karnataka Government with the assistance of ISRO has implemented the satellite based EDUSAT program in 2004-05 to facilitate distant classroom education for students studying in schools. Under the said programme, 2547 schools from 05 educational districts of our state (Bangalore Rural District, Ramanagara, Chamarajanagar, Gulbarga and Yadgiri) have been selected for EDUSAT programme.

Telecast of Tele - Education lessons :
Tele-Education lessons are telecasted for class 4 to 10 in selected schools of 10 districts of Karnataka State.

Teleconference :
A teleconference programs are conducted by the Department of School Education and Literacy and other departments using Krishna Studio and Hub of DSERT. Teachers and all stakeholders of the department can participate through receiving centers at 34 DIETS, 204 Block Resource Centers, EDUSAT and TELE-EDUCATION schools.
Jnanadeepa You-Tube channel :
DSERT’s Jnanadeepa You-tube channel is an educational channel, which has 33k subscribers. Videos of major educational initiatives, e-Samveda, Parikshavani, Makkalavani, Kaliyutta- Naliyona, NTSE – NMMS and GMAT are made available.
Studios :
D.S.E.R.T. has well-equipped studio facilities. Krishna Studio, Audio Studio and Tunga Studios are upgraded with high definition tools. E-Samveda video lessons, children's audio, test audio, programs, audio lessons, NISHTA videos, NEP based Guruchetana modules and state level programs/workshops recording and editing activities are carried out. Jnadeepa Youtube and Facebook live-streaming of teleconference programs and educational programs of DSERT are carried out at Krishna Studio.
HUB :
The 6.3 Ku-band HUB is located at DSERT, Bangalore. It has two Satellite Interactive Terminal channels(SIT) and two Receive-only Terminal channels (ROT). EDUSAT and TELE-Education classes are telecasted through Vidyavahini channel.
Video conference facility :
KSWAN connected Video conference facility in 41 units including 30 DIET Centres, 8 Deputy Director's Offices, Commissioner's Office, Department of Pre-University Education and DSERT these have been provided in collaboration with CeG. Components like VC endpoint, Display UPS (1KVA) and KSWAN 2 Mbps Connectivity are part of this infrastructure.
